Can’t Bear to Run by Lynn Red

Review Courtesy of April Hollingworth

This is the first book in the Kendal Creek Bears series and it is different. Slightly edgy with humor flowing through it, I have to wonder what will happen in the next book. To be perfectly honest, I really liked it. Dax is a sexy bear who is totally adorable. Raine is fierce yet still learning to trust herself. A fabulous start to a brand new series, this is a unique and funny book with a slice of OMG thrown in.

Opening Scene:

Like most all of my greatest mistakes, it began with a rousing karaoke rendition of a Michael Bolton song.

The Review:

Raine Mathews used to laugh and have fun; she was quirky and slightly goofy. Being under her husband’s thumb for the last six years put a stop to all that. Her only reprieve is a memory of a gorgeous man with twinkling eyes, a man she only saw once six years ago, and never even talked to. That single memory gives her hope in her darkest moments, and she knows the only way she can survive, is to get away from her husband, no matter what.

In the back of her mind she knows, somehow, somewhere she will meet the man with the laughing eyes and carefree smile again.

Daxon Mark is the sexy as hell alpha bear of the Kendal clan. He’s also frustrated and feeling trapped between shuffling truces with the other clan bears, and the meddling and overbearing shifter council. He can’t get the image of the woman he saw six years ago out of his head, and deep down feels like she is the key to his sanity.

With Raine on the run and Dax escaping the confines of small town politics, the two finally meet again - in the most romantic place – the toilet line at a concert.

With a glance, he steals her heart, and she sets his soul on fire. Yet with trouble brewing back in Kendal Creek, and with Raine constantly looking over her shoulder, will they have their happily ever after or will, fear, politics and murder rip them apart?

Notable Scene:

He nodded, and grinned broadly. “Come on!”

Unsure, and still questioning exactly what I’d done to deserve such bizarrely gallant restroom chivalry, I slowly made my way toward him. “Me?”

“You see any other beautiful women with enchanting eyes and delicious lips anywhere around?”

I felt myself blush deeply, but I was smiling at the same time. I couldn’t remember the last time anyone said anything remotely like that to me, but damn it felt good, even if he was just being a hammy meathead.

“Uh, I guess not?” I asked. “But… why not let that guy go first?”

The little shrimp kicked his legs, which were dangling a full six inches off the ground.

“Because I’ve got a heart of gold. I help old women cross the street and make sure gorgeous women who look like they’ve needed to hit the head for a few hours use the toilet before college twerps with a coke habit. And don’t think I don’t remember you.”
