Horns for the Harem Girl by Lynn Red my review
Review Courtesy of April Hollingworth
I found this book different. At first I wasn’t fond of Arad, and then I just couldn’t stop reading and hoping that he will find and achieve his happily ever after. I curled up with Horns for the Harem Girl, and didn’t put it down until the end of the book. I found it intriguing and wonderful, and to be honest, beautiful.
Opening Scene:
“You keep looking somewhere, Arad,” Jonathan Crane, an Englishman adrift in the desert kingdom ruled by King Saram, said to his friend.
The Review:
After joining the harem, Helena is unsure of everything, including herself. Been suddenly dropped into a life of luxury fills her with questions she can’t answer, like will she ever tune a harp? And are her dreams still hers? Love has turned into a distant thought, after all learning to survive life in the palace has turned into her main priority. Until she glances at the young prince of Salomana, and finds him gazing right back at her, his gold flecked eyes burning straight to her heart and sparking it back to life. Prince Arad is tall, wild and has also never considered settling down, until the day a mysterious woman in his father’s harem catches his attention. Entranced by her curves, her eyes, and the way she moves, Arad isn’t about to look away, even when she catches him staring. But a kingdom steeped in a thousand years worth of tradition, makes falling in love difficult. After all she’s a commoner and he is an Ibex-shifting royal, destined to be king. To claim her as his is blasphemy. When Arad realizes he can’t live without her, he’s determined nothing will stop him, even if it means he has to topple a kingdom, and set the place on fire. He will claim her, love her, if only they can survive the revolution and the politics neither of them ever wanted.
Notable Scene:
“How do I get myself into these stupid messes?” she asked herself, and the empty hallway. “How can I not read a damn map?!” “Because,” a voice – a smooth, calm and unbearably rugged voice – came to her ears. “I drew gibberish, knowing it would lead you here to me. I’ve dreamed of your skin, I’ve been enraptured by your eyes, I’ve-“ Before he could finish, Helena delivered a ripping slap right to the prince’s cheek. “You terrified me!” she said in a hissed whisper. “I could have been lost! I could have died in here!” After his shock, and the sting of her practiced blow, wore off, he couldn’t help but laugh. Gently of course. “I knew where you’d be. How could you die in here?” He took her hand to prevent another painful smack. “And watch that,” he said. “Your rings hurt more than you probably think.” “I turned it backwards on purpose,” Helena said. “Even behind the veil, your eyes blaze,” Arad said, his voice a mixture of leather, chocolate and honey dripping from a freshly cracked comb. “My man gave you my message, but only I can give you what I truly want you to have.”
